CONSULTING SERVICE
The consulting service is based on the Occupational Pain Medicine model of care and is available to stakeholders involved in helping injured persons achieve a safe and sustainable return to work (RTW).
The following services are offered:
1. Complex case assessment:
These involve detailed assessment of a person with a complex case. The focus is on persistent pain management options, and RTW barriers and strategies, with emphasis on biopsychosocial contextual factors. The assessment includes provision of a detailed report.
2. Complex case desktop assessment:
These involve detailed desktop assessment of relevant medical records, medical reports and other relevant documentation, in cases in which in-person examination is not requested. The focus is on persistent pain management options, RTW barriers and RTW strategies, with emphasis on biopsychosocial contextual factors. The assessment includes provision of a detailed report.
3. Independent medical examination:
These involve independent medical examination of persons for insurers or legal firms. Assessments can address liability, diagnosis, management, biopsychosocial contextual factors, work capacity, RTW barriers and RTW strategies. The assessment includes provision of a detailed report. These can be combined with a worksite assessment as required.
(Please note impairment assessments are not available.)
4. Fitness for duties assessment:
These involve assessment for employers of an injured person’s work capacity, including addressing of biopsychosocial contextual factors, RTW barriers and RTW strategies. The assessment includes provision of a detailed report. These can be combined with a worksite assessment as required. (An option is available for recommendations via a short report only, if requested.)
5. Worksite assessment:
These can follow an independent medical examination or fitness for duties assessment and involve detailed assessment of an injured person’s workplace. The assessment focuses on the inherent requirements of usual duties as well as any available modified/alternative/suitable duties. Also addressed are any biopsychosocial contextual factors, RTW barriers and RTW strategies that may become apparent during the worksite assessment. The assessment includes provision of a detailed report.
6. Independent liability assessment:
These involve detailed scrutiny of relevant medical records, medical reports and other relevant documentation to provide independent assessment of liability for particular conditions. These can include in-person assessment or be performed via just desktop assessment. The assessment includes provision of a detailed report.
7. Neuromodulation assessment:
These involve detailed independent assessment of the suitability of persons with persistent pain for undergoing neuromodulation procedures such as spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, and dorsal root ganglion stimulation. Assessments can occur:
- pre-trial to determine neuromodulation suitability, incl. assessment of contextual factors
- post-trial to determine trial outcomes and thus whether to proceed to permanent implant
- post-implant regarding work capacity, RTW barriers and RTW strategies
8. Medical advisor services:
Other medical advisor services are available to employers, insurers, or other stakeholders, in addition to the services already described. Please discuss your needs directly with Dr Miller.
